Several Things To Consider When Planning What To Pack For Your Vacation
61
You might look forward to your next vacation, but I'm sure you're not too excited about the planning that is involved. From packing up your family to the exhausting search for a pet sitter, all these errands can bring you down. However, it doesn't have to. Getting a
little advice can help you get organized, and then all you have to
worry about is having fun. First, find your passport. If you can't,
consider getting an expedited
passport renewal. It costs extra, but the peace of mind is
definitely worth it.
Whether you're traveling abroad or staying in the U.S., it's important to have your official passport close at hand. Not only is it a great proof of identification, but can also be handy if your wallet is lost or stolen. You're going to have to do it eventually, so do
it now so you don't have to worry about it later.
"Packing light" for an international trip can seem impossible, I know first hand. But it's very important to avoid this. You will appreciate not bringing every coat you own when you have to lug all five bags ten blocks to your hotel. The first and best thing to do is to relax and start a list. No matter how obvious something seems, put it on your list anyway. This especially includes the important things, like your tickets, passports, reservations, car keys, directions, and things of that nature. Tossing things into your bag as they cross your mind really isn't a good strategy. This can leave you in a panic if you can't find something and don't know if you packed it or not.
When making your list, consider the weather, location, and your planned activities. For example, you'll need an umbrella if it's rainy, a burqa if you're staying in some middle eastern countries, and swimming trunks if you plan on swimming. Every vacation has a different packing list,
and knowing exactly what you need will prevent you from running around
looking for your snorkel right before you have to leave. Will you be
going to the beach? Don't forget your beach towel, sunscreen,
sunglasses, and flip-flops. If you're going to a colder climate, bring
gloves, a scarf, and warm coats. Will you be camping? Bring bug spray
and a sleeping bag.
Travel-size toiletries can be incredibly useful when trying to pack. The large bottles that you'd normally use will be too space-consuming to take overseas. They also
have the potential to explode or leak everywhere. Unless you are going
some place extremely remote, you will probably be able to get access to a
drug store to restore your supply.
Be sure to make copies of passports and other applicable travel documents. Some examples of "travel documents" would be items like important phone numbers, airline tickets, identification, and reservations. After you scan them, email them to yourself so they are easily
accessible. Print copies and leave these with family members or the
house sitter so someone always knows where you are.
All that's left is squeezing all your stuff into your bag. Consider
every piece of clothing carefully and leave out anything you won't need.
Make sure you have your passports, and if not, invest in a damaged
U.S. passport replacement. Now that you are all set, relax and enjoy
your vacation.
